The data

Every entry is one public declaration that Bitcoin had failed or was going to zero. Each one records the original quote, who said it, where it ran, the date, and what Bitcoin cost that day.

What counts as an obituary

An entry qualifies when a named person or publication with a credible title or audience makes a substantively negative claim about Bitcoin, on a date that can be identified, in a source that can be linked.

That covers more than predictions of death. It includes calling Bitcoin a scam or a bubble, arguing it has failed at what it was meant to do, saying something else does the job better, or announcing you have sold and others should too.

Market reporting is not criticism. A story that Bitcoin fell four percent is data, and nobody in it is making a claim. Anonymous posts and undated statements are excluded because neither can be checked.

How sources are verified

An archive whose links have died stops being evidence. Every source is checked for link rot on a schedule.

Snapshots are taken while a link is still working, not after it breaks. That is the point. 413 of 478 sources have an archived copy, and most of those links still work today. The snapshot is there for when they stop.

Snapshots are matched to a date close to publication, so the page you see is the page the quote came from, not a later rewrite or paywall.

The numbers, as data

Counts by year, top critics, top publications, and archive coverage are published as JSON and regenerated on every deploy:

The individual records are not published as a bulk file. Each one is a page on this site with its quote, source link, and archived copy. If you need the full dataset for research or reporting, ask and it will be shared.
