Provenance

Where each entry comes from, and who copies it.

Every one of the 478 entries in this database was found, checked against its source, titled and dated here. This page explains how that can be verified, and lists the sites that republish the database.

How to tell an entry originated here

  • The added date. Each obituary page shows the day its entry entered this database, separately from the date of the quote. Entries added before the log began in March 2025 do not show one.
  • Third-party snapshots. New pages are submitted to the Wayback Machine when they go live. The snapshot is held and timestamped by the Internet Archive, not by this site, so the date can be checked by anyone.
  • The titles. Many entry titles are written here rather than copied from the source article, and the source is one click away for comparison. A copy that carries this site's title for a quote carries this site's work.
  • The archived sources. Where a source has an archived copy, it was captured near the date of publication and linked from the entry. Copies that repeat those archive links took them from here.
  • The record. The database is kept under version control. Every addition and edit is recorded with a timestamp, and that history can be produced.

Sites that republish this database

The database is free to read, link, quote and cite. Copying it in bulk and redistributing it is not covered by that, and needs a licence. The terms set this out. The sites below republish it. Each line states what can be seen on the site itself, and the date it was first noted here.

WhatRepublishes every entry, including the titles written here, on a chart page with CSV, XLS and JSON downloads and a token-gated API. Its API documentation shows records carrying this site’s internal field names. New entries appear there within minutes of being published here.
