Terms and licensing

Effective September 2, 2026.

Read, link, quote and cite this site freely, with attribution. Do not copy the database in bulk, collect it with software, or republish it. Bulk and commercial access is licensed separately, and the aggregate figures are CC BY.

What this site is and who owns it

Bitcoin Is Dead is published by Jerry Feng. It is a curated database of 478 public declarations that Bitcoin had failed or would go to zero, dating from 2010 to 2026.

The database is an original compilation. Which declarations are included, how each is described, the titles and summaries written for them, the matching of each to the Bitcoin price on its date, the archived copies of sources, and the arrangement of the whole are the work of the publisher. That compilation, and all text written for this site, is copyright Jerry Feng.

The quotes are the words of the people who said them. They are reproduced as short excerpts, each with a link to its source, for the purposes of commentary, criticism and reporting. No claim is made to them. No claim is made to plain facts either, such as a date or a price.

What you may do without asking

  • Read any page and link to it.
  • Share a page, a screenshot of the chart, or a social card.
  • Quote up to 10 entries in an article, post, paper, talk or video, with attribution and a link to the page or to bitcoindeaths.com.
  • Cite the database in research or journalism. A suggested form is on the data page.
  • Use the official embeds on your own site, unmodified.
  • Use the aggregate figures file and llms.txt under CC BY 4.0, described below.

Search engines and AI assistants

Crawling this site to index it, and using what is indexed to answer questions with a link back to the page the answer came from, is welcome. That is what the pages are for.

Collecting the records to build a dataset, feed, API, chart or product is not covered by that, whether the collecting is done by a person, a script, or an AI agent acting for one. That needs a licence.

What needs a licence

  • Copying more than 10 entries.
  • Automated collection of record pages or page data beyond what search indexing requires.
  • Redistributing entries in any form: a file, a feed, an API, a chart, a table, or a product.
  • Selling access to entries, or including them in something sold.
  • Presenting the database, or a substantial part of it, as your own.

Licences are available. Academic research and non-commercial journalism get the full dataset free, with attribution. Commercial use, including data services, APIs, newsletters and embedded charts, is licensed for a fee. Write to hello@jerryfeng.com. A licence tells you what you may do; it does not transfer ownership.

The aggregate figures: CC BY 4.0

The counts by year, top critics, top publications, archive coverage and date range published in bitcoin-obituaries-stats.json and llms.txt are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Use them anywhere, for anything, as long as you credit Bitcoin Is Dead (bitcoindeaths.com) and link to the site. That licence covers those two files only. It does not cover the individual records, which have never been offered under it.

Attribution

Wherever attribution is required, this is enough: the name Bitcoin Is Dead, and a link to bitcoindeaths.com or to the page you used. Online, the link must be a working hyperlink, not plain text.

Use outside these terms

Any use not permitted above, and not covered by a licence, is unauthorised. Permission to use the site ends automatically for anyone who breaches these terms, and the publisher may block access by technical means. Each entry is dated in the site's own records and in third-party archives, so when something was published here can be shown. Sites that republish the database are listed on the provenance page.

Accuracy, corrections and removals

Every entry links to its source and, where possible, to an archived copy, so it can be checked. Errors are corrected when found. If you are quoted and believe an entry is wrong, misattributed, or taken out of context, write to hello@jerryfeng.com and it will be reviewed. Source links point to third-party sites that are not controlled here.

Nothing on this site is investment advice. Bitcoin prices are historical figures from public market data and are shown for context.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and the federal laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law rules. Any dispute about them, or about use of this site, is to be brought in the state or federal courts located in California, and you consent to their jurisdiction. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.

Changes

These terms may be updated. The effective date at the top changes when they are. Use of the site after a change means the current terms apply.

How the database is built is on the data page. Who runs it is on the about page.
